Taraba holds inaugural marathon to combat youth restiveness and promote sports

In a bid to curb youth restiveness and promote sporting activities, the Taraba State Ministry of Youth and Sports organized the inaugural Nature’s Gift 21-km Marathon on Saturday, May 25, in Jalingo, the state capital. Despite heavy rainfall, the event attracted over 100 athletes competing for top prizes.

Nenfort Mathias from Plateau and Charity Agbofure from Delta emerged victorious in the male and female categories, respectively. Mathias secured first place in the male category with a time of 1 hour, 5 minutes, and 49 seconds, while Agbofure clinched the top spot in the female category, finishing in 1 hour, 12 minutes, and 42 seconds. Both winners received a grand prize of N200,000.

In his address, Taraba State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Joseph Joshua, congratulated all participating athletes for their resilience amid challenging weather conditions. He particularly commended the courage of the top three runners in each category, urging them to persist in their athletic pursuits.

Joshua expressed his gratitude to the state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for supporting the marathon’s success and encouraged the youth of Taraba State to participate in future events. “As you can see, we had participating athletes from other states, and even the top runners are from Delta and Plateau states. We made this race open for all athletes from across the country to participate. With the success of this maiden edition, subsequent ones will be bigger and more colorful,” he stated.

The top three runners in both the male and female categories were awarded cash prizes of N200,000, N150,000, and N100,000, respectively. All other participating athletes received certificates of participation, recognizing their efforts and encouraging future involvement in sporting events.

This event marks a significant step towards engaging youth in positive activities and fostering a spirit of sportsmanship in Taraba State.
