Super Eagles’ Ola Aina confident ahead of World Cup qualifier against South Africa

Lagos, Nigeria – Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest full-back, Olaoluwa Temitayo Aina, has expressed confidence and determination ahead of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa, reports Soccernet.ng. The 27-year-old defender has been a key player for Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad this season, despite missing almost two months due to injury.

Aina, who played all seven games for Nigeria at the AFCON 2023 tournament—including a grueling 120 minutes against South Africa where he missed a penalty—returns to the international stage as Nigeria prepares to host South Africa on June 7th in their third World Cup qualifying match. Expectations are high following the Super Eagles’ draws in their first two qualifiers.

In a recent interview, Aina shared his aspirations for the upcoming match and the new coaching era under Finidi George. “What is on my mind is to win and progress and also to welcome the new coach. The appointment of the coach is good for the team and the nation,” said the former Chelsea player, as quoted by News Africa Now.

Aina missed the March international break due to injury, with Bright Osayi-Samuel stepping in as the right wing-back. This absence also meant that Aina missed Finidi’s first two matches as interim coach against Ghana and Mali.

Following the South Africa match, the Super Eagles are scheduled to travel to Ivory Coast to face Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic during the final international break of the 2023/2024 football season. This series of matches is crucial for Nigeria’s hopes of progressing in the World Cup qualifiers and setting a strong foundation for the future under Coach Finidi George.
