Vivian Ibrahim, the founder of Queen Vee Chess Club for IDPs has praised young chess players from the Adamawa State IDP camps featuring in the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.
The young lady credited for introducing the game of chess to the IDP kids in the northeastern states of Nigeria said it was amazing that the kid players who only played chess for the first in May 2024 could go this far. One of them won seven out of nine games played. The player finished fourth and lost out of the medal hunt but the fact that he could get to such a level having just started and more so venturing out of his immediate environment for the first time left officials quite dumbfounded.
Vivian, the Convener Chess in IDP Camps initiative said on Tuesday, “From Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp to National Youth Games, Asaba 2024.
“Our boys represented Adamawa State well in chess at the National Youth Games. They demonstrated resilience and courage by defeating multiple opponents. One of our boys impressively won 7 out of 9 games played, but unfortunately got knocked out of the bronze medal position at the last minute.
“It was their first time outside Adamawa State; their first experience competing outside the camp, using a chess clock, and recording their moves.”
The former Miss Adamawa is excited about what the future holds for the kids in the game of chess.
“These four boys only started learning chess in May this year. The potential and promise displayed by these young individuals signal a bright future ahead for them,” she noted.
