The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team has named Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino as its new head coach. Pochettino, who has managed top European clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur, will take over from Gregg Berhalter, who was dismissed in July following the team’s early exit from the Copa America.

The announcement was made shortly after the U.S. team’s 1-1 draw with New Zealand in a friendly match on Tuesday, September 10.

Pochettino, widely regarded as one of football’s top coaching talents, gained recognition during his tenure with Southampton in the English Premier League. He later led Tottenham Hotspur to success and managed Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea before taking on the U.S. role.

In a statement, Pochettino expressed his excitement, saying, “This decision was about more than just football; it’s about the journey and potential of this team and country. There’s a hunger to achieve something historic here, and I’m inspired by that.”

The Argentine coach is expected to guide the U.S. team through the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. His first match in charge is scheduled for October 12 against Panama.

Pochettino’s appointment marks a new chapter for U.S. Soccer as they prepare for their World Cup campaign on home soil.
