Flying Eagles crashes out of  African Games

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria faced a disappointing exit from the men’s football event of the 2023 African Games in Ghana, succumbing to a 3-2 defeat against Senegal.

The match, held at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday evening, witnessed an early lead by the Flying Eagles as Charles Agada netted a goal in the second minute. However, Idrissa Traore swiftly equalized for Senegal in the 21st minute with a well-placed shot.

Nigeria’s Chibuzor Izuogu showcased brilliance with a free kick, bringing the score to 2-2 and reigniting hopes for the Flying Eagles. Nevertheless, Senegal secured victory as Pape Diouf successfully converted a penalty kick, sealing their spot in the semi-finals.

Despite securing only one victory against South Sudan, the Flying Eagles demonstrated resilience throughout the tournament. They suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Uganda in their opening match and then the 3-2 loss to Senegal.

Nigeria’s Coach, Bosso, expressed disappointment with the outcome and attributed it to inadequate preparation. Bosso lamented the limited time for player scouting, mentioning his observations of players like Daga and Chibueze from Enyimba after watching few games in Uyo and elsewhere.

The Flying Eagles had previously clinched the men’s football silver at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco, losing 2-0 to Burkina Faso in the final.
