Manchester, UK – Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his concerns about Manchester United’s current state under manager Erik ten Hag, suggesting that the club needs to “rebuild everything” to compete for top honors again.
Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Ronaldo, who had two spells at United before moving to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, questioned Ten Hag’s mentality and approach. The comments come amid growing pressure on Ten Hag following United’s poor performance last season, finishing eighth in the Premier League—their worst in history—and two losses in their first three games this season.
“The coach says they cannot compete to win the [Premier] League and Champions League,” Ronaldo said. “As Manchester United coach, you cannot say that… you have to try. What I wish for Manchester United is for them to be the best team they can.”
Ronaldo, who won numerous titles during his first stint at United, added that the club has stagnated since the retirement of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. He noted there has been “no evolution” at the club since then, and it would be impossible to compete without a complete overhaul.
In an optimistic note, Ronaldo welcomed the changes initiated by United’s new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who recently purchased a 25% stake in the club, saying: “The club needs time to rebuild… but they understand this is the only way.”
Ronaldo also praised the recent addition of former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy to Ten Hag’s coaching staff, suggesting it could bring positive change. “If Ten Hag listens to Ruud, maybe he can help himself… the people who understand the football are the people who were there in the dressing room.”
Despite his criticism, Ronaldo expressed hope for the club’s future, believing that with proper rebuilding, Manchester United could regain its competitive edge.
