Nigerian para powerlifter Bose Omolayo has added to Team Nigeria’s medal haul by winning the silver medal in the women’s up to 79kg category at the ongoing Paralympic Games.
Omolayo’s performance secured her a place on the podium for the third consecutive Paralympics, lifting 145kg to earn a silver medal. This latest achievement follows the two gold medals she previously won at the Rio and Tokyo Paralympics.
Despite battling discomfort from a right arm injury sustained during her first attempt, Omolayo fought through the pain. Although she was unable to complete her final two lifts, her earlier efforts were enough to secure a medal for Nigeria.
This victory brings Nigeria’s medal count to six at the Games, with Omolayo’s silver being the country’s third medal on Saturday. Powerlifting remains Nigeria’s most successful event in the Paralympics, with the country amassing 24 gold, 16 silver, and 14 bronze medals prior to the Paris 2024 Games.
Omolayo’s achievement follows in the footsteps of fellow powerlifter Loveline Obiji, a two-time Paralympic medalist, who won silver in Tokyo 2020 and gold in London 2016.
