Despite securing four Rookie of the Month awards, Super Eagles star Victor Boniface has missed out on being named Bundesliga Player of the Season. The prolific forward, who is Bayer Leverkusen’s top scorer this season with 21 goals and 10 assists from 33 games, was overshadowed by his teammate Florian Wirtz for the prestigious accolade.

Wirtz’s impressive performance over the season, which included 11 goals and 11 assists in 32 games, played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga campaign. His consistent form earned him the Bundesliga Player of the Month award three times, a key criterion for the Player of the Season nomination.

In a competitive field, Wirtz edged out Stuttgart’s Sehrou Guirassy and Deniz Undav, along with Leverkusen teammates Alejandro Grimaldo and Boniface. As a result, Leverkusen claimed both the Bundesliga Player of the Season and Rookie of the Season titles, with Boniface securing the latter.

Boniface’s remarkable debut season in the Bundesliga has also put him in the running for a potential nomination for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, following in the footsteps of compatriot Victor Osimhen, who ranked eighth in the 2023 Ballon d’Or awards.

Looking ahead, Leverkusen aims to continue their successful run. They face Atalanta in the Europa League final in Dublin on Wednesday and will travel to Berlin to compete against Kaiserslautern in the DFB-Pokal final next Saturday, setting the stage for a possible unbeaten treble.
