Manchester United were held to a disappointing 1–1 draw by Wolves at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, a result that drew boos from home fans and underlined growing concerns over the team’s lack of creativity and consistency.

Stand-in captain Lisandro Martinez admitted the players were unhappy with the performance, conceding that expectations at the club remain high.

“The lads are very disappointed. We expect better,” Martinez said after the match.

United supporters clearly shared that sentiment, voicing their frustration at full-time against a Wolves side that had lost 11 consecutive league matches before the encounter and remain rooted near the bottom of the Premier League table. Despite claiming their first point since early October, Wolves are still on course to challenge Derby County’s record as the division’s worst-ever side.

During the second half, fans repeatedly urged United to “attack, attack, attack” as chances proved scarce. Head coach Ruben Amorim’s decision to replace one central defender, Ayden Heaven, with another, Leny Yoro, late in the game further fuelled discontent, with teenage forwards Chido Obi and Shea Lacey left unused on the bench.

The result followed a worrying run of home performances for United, which has included defeat to 10-man Everton, a draw with third-bottom West Ham and a four-goal concession against Bournemouth. While United beat Newcastle on Boxing Day, the Wolves draw again exposed ongoing problems.

Despite the mixed results, United will end 2025 in sixth place, level on points with Chelsea and behind them only on goal difference. They cannot drop lower than seventh when the current round of fixtures concludes on New Year’s Day.

Amorim, however, remained optimistic about the future, pointing to the club’s mounting injury problems.

“I’m really confident,” the Portuguese coach said. “We just need to recover all the players. I don’t know what is going to happen until the end of the season, then we will make the resume of the season. But when we recover all the players, we are going to be a strong team. There is no doubt in my mind.”

United were again without several key players. Mason Mount became the eighth absentee after failing to recover from an injury sustained in the win over Newcastle, while captain Bruno Fernandes was also missing. Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo are away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Kobbie Mainoo is sidelined with injury, and the absence of creative options was evident.

Joshua Zirkzee, who scored United’s opening goal with a deflected effort, was substituted at half-time despite giving his side the lead. With Matheus Cunha struggling for form and Benjamin Sesko still adapting, Zirkzee was one of Amorim’s few attacking options.

Amorim defended his decisions, insisting his focus was solely on responding to the demands of the game.

“I just look at what I can do to win the game,” he said. “We needed to do what the game was asking because we were struggling. I’m not looking for age and experience. They put a lot of men in the middle of the park and, with Jack [Fletcher], we balanced that.”

The draw leaves United searching for answers as they head into the new year, with pressure mounting to improve performances and results at home.
