Sudan recorded their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory since 2012 with a hard-fought win over Equatorial Guinea in Casablanca, boosting their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2025 tournament.

The decisive moment came 16 minutes from time when Equatorial Guinea defender Saul Coco turned a cross into his own net, condemning the National Thunder to a second successive defeat in Group E.

The result marked the end of Sudan’s eight-match winless run at AFCON, which included a loss to Algeria four days earlier. It was also a historic victory in the first-ever AFCON meeting between the two sides.

Despite being forced to play their qualification matches outside Sudan due to the ongoing civil war in the country, the Falcons of Jediane produced a determined display in a contest marked by missed chances at both ends.

Equatorial Guinea, who had suffered a last-gasp defeat to Burkina Faso in their opening group match, now face an uphill task to qualify. They must pull off an upset against Algeria in their final group fixture if they are to keep alive hopes of matching their run to the last 16 at the 2023 finals.

Sudan now sit level on three points with Burkina Faso and Algeria in Group E. Sudan will face Burkina Faso in their final group match in Casablanca on Wednesday at 16:00 GMT, while Algeria and Burkina Faso are scheduled to meet in Rabat later on Sunday.

Equatorial Guinea will also be in action on Wednesday in Rabat, where they must defeat Algeria to stand a realistic chance of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams.
