Defending champions Ivory Coast began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Mozambique in a Group F match played in Marrakech.
Manchester United forward Amad Diallo scored the decisive goal shortly after half-time, rescuing the Elephants after they wasted several chances in a dominant first-half display against the 102nd-ranked Mozambicans.
Ivory Coast controlled possession from the opening minutes and created a number of opportunities before the break, but were repeatedly denied by Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan, who made key saves to keep his side in the contest. Ghislain Konan also missed a clear chance when he fired wide after being picked out inside the box by Amad.

The breakthrough arrived in the 49th minute when Franck Kessié’s knockdown fell kindly to Amad, who showed composure to drive a low shot between the legs of defender Reinildo and into the net.
The defending champions pushed for a second goal late on, with substitute Vakoun Bayo going close in stoppage time before Ernan and a last-ditch clearance from Guima prevented further damage.
Ivory Coast held on to secure maximum points and take an early step in their quest to retain the title, a feat last achieved by Egypt in 2010.
Mozambique will face Gabon in their next Group F fixture, while Ivory Coast are set for a high-profile clash against five-time champions Cameroon in Marrakech.
