Mohamed Salah scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as seven-time champions Egypt came from behind to defeat Zimbabwe 2–1 in their opening Group B match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Liverpool forward struck in the final minute of added time to rescue the Pharaohs after they were left frustrated for long periods by resolute Zimbabwe defending and inspired goalkeeping in Agadir.
Against the run of play, Zimbabwe stunned Egypt in the first half when Prince Dube opened the scoring in the 20th minute. The Warriors forward controlled a cross inside the box, turned sharply and calmly side-footed past the Egyptian goalkeeper to hand his side a surprise lead.

Egypt dominated possession and created several chances, but profligacy in front of goal and the heroics of 40-year-old Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi kept the underdogs ahead at the break. Salah, Trezeguet and Emam Ashour all went close, while Arubi produced a string of fine saves to frustrate the North Africans.
The pressure finally told in the 64th minute when Manchester City striker Omar Marmoush drove in from the left and fired a powerful shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle to level the score.
With Egypt pushing for a winner and Zimbabwe clinging on, the match appeared to be heading for a draw until Salah struck in stoppage time. The Egyptian captain reacted quickest to a loose ball in the penalty area, held off his marker and poked home to seal all three points.
The late goal proved a harsh blow for Zimbabwe, who delivered a disciplined and spirited performance, but Egypt will be relieved to have started their campaign with a victory as they chase a record-extending eighth AFCON title.
Egypt will face South Africa in their next Group B fixture on Friday in Agadir, while Zimbabwe will travel to Marrakesh to take on Angola as the group continues.
