Former Nigerian international and African football legend, Garba Lawal, has expressed doubts over the Super Eagles’ ability to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), citing a perceived lack of character and fighting spirit within the current squad.

Lawal, who represented Nigeria at four AFCON tournaments between 2000 and 2006, made the remarks while speaking to Egypt’s FilGoal.com. He stressed the importance of the continental showpiece, describing it as Africa’s most prestigious football competition.

“I participated in the Africa Cup of Nations four times between 2000 and 2006. It is the biggest tournament on the continent and we must respect it,” Lawal said.

Although he never lifted the trophy, the former midfielder recalled winning silver and bronze medals with the Super Eagles, experiences he said underscored the significance of the competition.

Lawal also emphasised the need for commitment from players invited to national duty, warning that the absence of star players could diminish the quality and competitiveness of the tournament.

“It is important that players join their national teams when they are called up to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations, because the absence of stars negatively affects the tournament,” he added.

Turning his attention to Nigeria’s current situation, Lawal admitted there is widespread disappointment following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria was eliminated from the qualifiers after losing to Congo in the African play-off for the global play-off.

“In Nigeria, we are disappointed not to have qualified for the 2026 World Cup, and we feel that the players do not have the character and spirit to win the Africa Cup of Nations,” he said. “Even though they are a special generation, they must fight for their country.”

The 2025 AFCON will be hosted by Morocco from December 21 to January 18. Nigeria has been drawn in Group C, where the Super Eagles will face Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.

Despite his criticism, Lawal urged the team to rise to the occasion, noting that success at the tournament would depend largely on unity, commitment and national pride.
