Former Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has identified Brazil as the team to beat at the 2026 FIFA World Cup but believes Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, could pose the strongest challenge to the South American giants.

Ferguson said Brazil remain one of the favourites to lift the trophy, especially under the guidance of former Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, whom he believes has the experience and pedigree to lead the five-time world champions to success.

Speaking to Press Box PR, the legendary Scottish manager praised Brazil’s enduring quality at the World Cup, noting that the team traditionally rises to the occasion on football’s biggest stage.

“Portugal have got good players. I always think of Brazil at the World Cup,” Ferguson said. “The Brazilian players—I had the two young lads, twins, Rafael and Fabio.”

He added, “I think whoever beats Brazil will win the World Cup.”

Ferguson’s comments underline the high expectations surrounding Brazil ahead of the 2026 tournament, as well as Portugal’s potential to emerge as serious contenders with a squad rich in experience and talent.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was won by Argentina, who defeated France in a dramatic final dominated by Paris Saint-Germain stars Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, with anticipation already building over which football powerhouse will emerge victorious.
