Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has cited ex-Nigeria international Victor Moses as an example for Manchester United’s wing-backs, urging them to deliver more goals and assists in their current system.
Murphy, speaking on talkSPORT, said that when Chelsea won the Premier League under Antonio Conte playing a 3-4-3 formation, both Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses made decisive attacking contributions — a standard he believes United’s current players should aspire to.
United manager Ruben Amorim has deployed Amad Diallo, Patrick Dorgu, and Diogo Dalot in wing-back roles this season. While the team has enjoyed a recent run of good form, Murphy argued that their attacking output remains below expectations.
“I still think they could get a bit more from their wing-backs,” Murphy said. “When I think of teams who have played that system and been really successful, wing-backs have done really well.”
“When Chelsea won the league playing that 3-4-3, they had Alonso and Moses both chipping in with goals and assists regularly,” he added.
Murphy praised Dalot’s technical ability but questioned whether he was naturally suited to the wing-back position.
“I like Dalot, he’s a talent, but is he really a wing-back? He’s a right-footer playing at left wing-back.”
According to Murphy, wing-backs in an attacking system should not only provide width and defensive cover but also make key offensive contributions.
“Goals and assists — if you’re playing wing-back, you are getting in great areas,” he said. “I’m not talking double figures, but they need to chip in.”
So far this season, Diallo, Dorgu, and Dalot have combined for just three assists and no goals, a return Murphy believes must improve if Manchester United are to sustain a title challenge.
