Lagos — Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has come to the defence of Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, following widespread criticism of his performances in the recent World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.

Nwabali, who plays for Chippa United in South Africa, has faced intense scrutiny from fans who blamed him for errors during Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Lesotho. His composure in the encounter against Benin Republic also drew public backlash, with many supporters describing his on-pitch demeanor as unprofessional.

However, Coach Chelle dismissed the criticisms, insisting that Nwabali was only executing tactical instructions from the bench. Speaking on Eagle 7FM, the Malian tactician expressed full confidence in the goalkeeper’s abilities and leadership qualities.

“Everybody talks about emotions, but the reality is that nobody knows what I am asking my player,” Chelle said. “Maybe I ask Nwabali to be strong. I don’t want a nice guy in my goal.”

Chelle likened Nwabali’s fiery attitude to that of his former player, Vedran Runje, a Serbian goalkeeper known for his intense personality.

“He was so crazy on the pitch that the defence was crazy too. I need players with character. Maybe sometimes Nwabali needs to relax, but the reality is he gives everything for his team, his teammates, and his country,” Chelle explained.

The coach acknowledged that mistakes are part of football but emphasized that Nwabali’s passion and effort outweigh occasional lapses.

“Sometimes he makes mistakes, and this is normal, but the reality is he gives everything. All the players in this team give everything and will continue to do so,” he said.

Chelle also refused to dwell on past errors, stressing that the team’s focus is now on the upcoming playoff clash against Gabon in November.

“He needs some time to be calmer, okay. But the reality now is that we have him against Gabon, and we will go with all the players who can bring something,” the coach concluded.

Nwabali, who rose to prominence during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for his commanding displays, remains a key figure in Nigeria’s goalkeeping setup as the Super Eagles push to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
