South Africa tightened their grip on Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after cruising to a 3-0 victory over Lesotho on Friday evening in Bloemfontein.
The result moved Hugo Broos’ side to 16 points, strengthening their bid for a place at the tournament to be hosted in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Despite the emphatic scoreline, Broos admitted the clash was not straightforward. Speaking to SABC Sport, the Belgian coach described it as “a very nervous game” but praised his players’ execution.
“It’s a nice number, but the only thing that’s important is to win the games we are supposed to win. We did what we had to do and made beautiful goals,” Broos said.
Eyes on Nigeria Clash
South Africa now turn their attention to a high-stakes encounter against Nigeria, who remain desperate to revive their own faltering campaign.
Broos urged caution, reminding his squad that qualification is not yet sealed.
“We have to go on now, that’s the most important thing. We still haven’t qualified, even if we are in a very good position,” he warned. “We have it in our hands and will try not to give it away. When we do, there will be a very big party.”
With three games left, Bafana Bafana sit firmly in control but know the final stretch — particularly against rivals Nigeria — will define their World Cup destiny.
