Former AC Milan and PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has dismissed the debate over whether the Saudi Pro League is superior to France’s Ligue 1, a conversation reignited by Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent comments.
Speaking to the media via GOAL, Ibrahimovic refused to engage in the argument, emphasizing the lack of evidence to support such a comparison.
“There is nothing to answer — you can’t debate something when there is no evidence for one side. PSG is one of the great clubs of Europe in a very good league,” Zlatan said.
He acknowledged the dominance of leagues like the English Premier League and Spanish La Liga, stating, “Maybe only Spain and England can for sure say they are a superior league. I can’t even reply to a suggestion that the Saudi League is superior — I won’t even waste my time.”
Context of the Debate
The comments follow Ronaldo’s remarks at the Globe Soccer Awards, where the Portuguese star claimed the Saudi Pro League provided a better atmosphere for football than Ligue 1. Neymar, Ronaldo’s current teammate at Al-Hilal and a former PSG player, echoed similar sentiments, asserting the Saudi Pro League is superior to the French league.
Zlatan’s Experience
Ibrahimovic is well-versed in European football, having played in several top leagues, including Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1, and the Premier League. His tenure with PSG, where he played from 2012 to 2016, solidified his understanding of Ligue 1’s quality.
While Ronaldo and Neymar now promote the Saudi Pro League following their moves to Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal, Zlatan’s comments suggest skepticism about comparing the emerging league to established European competitions.
This debate continues to highlight the contrasting perspectives of players who have competed in both Europe and Saudi Arabia, offering unique insights into the evolving dynamics of global football.
