Former Scotland, Manchester United, and Manchester City striker Denis Law, the only Scottish player to have won the prestigious Ballon d’Or, has passed away at the age of 84.
Nicknamed “The King” and “The Lawman,” Law is remembered as one of football’s greatest players. During his illustrious career, he spent 11 years at Manchester United, scoring 237 goals in 404 appearances—making him the third-highest scorer in the club’s history, behind Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton.
Born in Aberdeen, Law began his football journey with Huddersfield Town before moving to Torino in Italy and later returning to England to star for both Manchester clubs. He was capped 55 times for Scotland, netting 30 goals, a record that still stands as the joint highest for the national team.
Law also made history by being sold for a British record transfer fee three times during his career.
In 2021, the football icon revealed he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.

In a heartfelt statement, Law’s family announced his passing:

Manchester United paid tribute, describing Law as “the King of the Stretford End” and “one of the club’s greatest and most beloved players.” The club added:
“The ultimate goalscorer, his flair, spirit, and love for the game made him the hero of a generation. Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’ family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.”
The Scotland national team hailed Law as “a true great,” stating, “We will not see his likes again.”
