Manchester City defender Kyle Walker has expressed his desire to leave the club and pursue opportunities abroad, manager Pep Guardiola revealed on Saturday.
Walker, 33, was left out of the squad for City’s emphatic 8-0 FA Cup third-round victory over Salford City despite being fit and available. Speaking after the match, Guardiola confirmed that the England international approached him on Thursday with the request.
“Two days ago, Kyle asked to explore the options to play abroad at the end of his career,” Guardiola said.
The Manchester City manager also disclosed that Walker had previously sought a move overseas following City’s historic treble-winning season in 2023. Bayern Munich had shown interest in the right-back, but negotiations fell through as their offer did not meet City’s valuation.
“He asked two years ago after the treble. Bayern Munich wanted him, but the offer was not good enough,” Guardiola explained.
Walker has been a key player for City since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2017, helping the club secure multiple domestic and European honors, including five Premier League titles.
Guardiola did not elaborate on whether the club would grant Walker’s latest request, but the news signals a potential end to the veteran defender’s illustrious career at the Etihad Stadium. Further developments are expected as the January transfer window progresses.
