Joshua Zirkzee held his nerve to score the decisive penalty as 10-man Manchester United overcame Arsenal in a dramatic FA Cup third-round clash at the Emirates.
United played with a numerical disadvantage for nearly an hour after Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card in the 61st minute for a reckless challenge on Arsenal’s Mikel Merino. Despite this, the Red Devils displayed remarkable resilience to secure victory.
Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for United in the 52nd minute with a stunning curled effort into the top corner, capitalizing on a defensive error by Gabriel and a precise cross from Alejandro Garnacho.
However, Dalot’s dismissal swung the momentum in Arsenal’s favor, and Gabriel equalized shortly after with a well-taken volley from close range.
The Gunners had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Kai Havertz won a penalty following a foul by Harry Maguire. But United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir denied Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard with a brilliant save, diving to his left to keep the scores level.
Arsenal pushed hard for a winner during extra time, with Declan Rice and Havertz coming close, but Bayindir was unbeatable. The match ultimately went to a penalty shootout.
Bayindir saved Havertz’s spot-kick before Zirkzee coolly converted United’s final penalty, sending David Raya the wrong way and sealing a memorable victory.
Amorim’s United Show Promise
Under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United are starting to display signs of progress. Just over a month ago, they lost 2-0 to Arsenal in the Premier League, but this performance demonstrated resilience and structure.
Zirkzee’s winning penalty marked a redemption moment for the striker, who had been jeered by fans during a recent loss to Newcastle. This result ends a five-game winless run in the league and provides Amorim with a foundation to build upon as United aim to regain form.
Arsenal’s Finishing Woes Continue
Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal were once again on display, leaving fans frustrated. Gabriel Martinelli thought he had given the Gunners an early lead, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Later, Havertz missed two crucial opportunities, including one in the penalty shootout.
Injuries to key players such as Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus have further depleted Mikel Arteta’s attacking options. With consecutive defeats at home and missed chances haunting them, Arsenal’s need for a clinical goalscorer has become a pressing concern.
The loss also marks Arsenal’s third third-round FA Cup exit in four seasons, casting further doubt on their ability to deliver trophies despite their aspirations.
Looking Ahead
Manchester United will hope this victory sparks a turnaround under Amorim, while Arsenal must regroup and address their shortcomings, with injuries and missed chances threatening to derail their ambitions.
