The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Executive Committee has approved the appointment of Éric Sékou Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team.

The decision was based on the recommendation of the NFF’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee following a meeting in Abuja on January 2, 2025. The appointment was officially endorsed by the NFF Executive Committee on January 7, 2025.

Éric Chelle, 47, is a seasoned coach with an impressive resume. He previously served as the head coach of Mali’s senior national team, leading them to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Under his leadership, Mali recorded 14 wins, five draws, and only three losses, showcasing a strong tactical approach and team cohesion.

Before coaching Mali, Chelle managed several clubs, including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.

As a player, Chelle had a notable career in France, representing clubs like Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. Internationally, he earned five caps for Mali despite being eligible to represent Côte d’Ivoire and France, owing to his mixed heritage.

During his tenure with Mali from 2022 to 2024, Chelle guided the Aiglons to one of their best AFCON performances. They reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire but narrowly lost 2-1 in extra time to the eventual champions. His tenure ended in June 2024, but his impact was widely recognized.

Chelle’s appointment comes at a critical time for the Super Eagles, following Finidi George’s resignation after underwhelming performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, which included a draw against South Africa and a loss to the Benin Republic.

The NFF and Nigerian football fans will look to Chelle to reinvigorate the Super Eagles and guide them back to dominance on the African and global stages. With his tactical acumen and proven track record, Chelle is expected to address the team’s recent challenges and lead them to future successes.

The NFF expressed confidence in Chelle’s ability to bring fresh ideas and a renewed sense of purpose to the Super Eagles, emphasizing its commitment to providing the necessary support for him to succeed in his new role.

The spotlight now shifts to Chelle as he prepares to take charge of one of Africa’s most renowned football teams.
