Bayer Leverkusen and Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface will remain on the sidelines for a little longer after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury, Sportingsun.ng reports.
The 24-year-old had an impressive start to the season, scoring eight goals and providing one assist in 15 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen. However, a hamstring injury sustained in mid-November has kept him out of action since then.
Hopeful Start to the Year Dashed
During the Christmas break, there were positive reports suggesting Boniface might return for Bayer Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga match of the year against Borussia Dortmund on January 10. Unfortunately, according to Werkself Xtra, the Nigerian forward experienced a minor setback during rehabilitation, forcing him to extend his recovery period.
While an official return date has not been confirmed, Boniface is now expected to miss not only the Borussia Dortmund clash but also the January 14 fixture against Mainz. However, there is optimism that he could be available for Bayer Leverkusen’s January 18 game against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Xabi Alonso’s Backup Plan
Despite Boniface’s absence, Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has options to maintain the team’s attacking momentum. Czech forward Patrik Schick was in fine form before the winter break, and the club will be hoping he can continue delivering strong performances.
As Boniface continues his recovery, fans and teammates alike will be eagerly awaiting the return of the prolific Super Eagles star, who has been a key figure in Bayer Leverkusen’s impressive campaign so far.
