The Main Organizing Committee (MOC) of the ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon has announced an increase in the prize money for the 5km fun run, raising it from $750 to $1,000 (approximately N1.7 million) ahead of its 2025 edition.

The 2025 marathon, scheduled for March 1 in Abuja, will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). MOC Chairman, Ambassador Francis Chuks Njoaguani, disclosed that the increased prize money is aimed at encouraging greater participation from ECOWAS citizens and fostering a culture of fitness.

“The 5km fun run is special to us because we initiated it as part of the 21km race to encourage more of our people to embrace walking, jogging, exercise, and running as part of their daily routine,” Njoaguani said. “This increase in prize money is a way to celebrate ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary and inspire our people to make running a way of life.”

Njoaguani, who also serves as the Director of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre in Ouagadougou, added that elite runners from across the ECOWAS region will be invited to compete for a total prize purse exceeding $71,000.

The event will feature two categories: the 5km fun run, starting at Eagle Square and ending at the ECOWAS Commission in Asokoro, and the 21km half marathon, which will both start and finish at the ECOWAS Commission.

Race Director Gabriel Okon highlighted that the marathon is open to all levels of runners, including elites, fitness enthusiasts, and fun runners from across the continent.

“This event is not just a celebration of athleticism but also a showcase of unity and the vibrant spirit of the region,” Okon stated.

The ECOWAS Abuja International Marathon continues to serve as a platform for promoting health, fitness, and regional integration among member states.
