Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has outlined the conditions under which he would consider leaving the Catalan giants.

The 27-year-old Dutchman revealed that he would only depart from Barcelona if he felt he could no longer make a meaningful contribution to the team or if the club failed to compete for major trophies.

De Jong, who joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019, is currently under contract with the Spanish La Liga champions until the summer of 2026. Despite being a key player for the Blaugrana in recent seasons, his future has been the subject of ongoing speculation.

Two summers ago, De Jong famously turned down a move to Manchester United, even as Barcelona reportedly sought to facilitate his transfer. The midfielder was again linked with a move away during the last summer transfer window but ultimately remained at Camp Nou.

Reflecting on his commitment to the club, De Jong dismissed claims that his desire to stay in Barcelona is tied to the city’s lifestyle.

“People think I want to stay at Barça forever because life outside football is so good here, and it is good, but it’s less important to what happens on the pitch,” De Jong told Voetbal International.

De Jong has been a vital part of Barcelona’s starting XI when fit, though injuries disrupted his contributions last season. As he approaches the midway point of his current contract, the midfielder’s future will undoubtedly remain a focal point of discussion.
